Literally slapping some sense into Marie and getting some payback for the last time she slapped her. Just be sure to offer a good explanation and a hug afterwards, Zoe.

Marie's life is starting to look like one of Tatiana's daydreams.
By the way, the thumbnail for this strip will make a fine addition to my "smug" image folder.

Just to let you know, that's not the actual thumbnail for this strip. That's a thumbnail for an older strip but sometimes the server takes a bit of time to refresh old images to the new updated one that I uploaded (the filename was the same, the old and the new, it's supposed to be overwriting the image but the server does this from time to time)

Remember kids, physical violence is the answer to everything (related to the modeling industry)

You’re assuming this will work. Even in Comics World, where token amounts of physical violence can achieve wondrous results, this may just come across to Marie as confirmation of Zoé’s vicious hostility. Mostly because that’s sort of true.
It probably depends how many strips Dave has given himself to finish this plot thread. I could imagine Sandra and Ingrid going on an epic quest to fetch back Alex or someone who can actually get through to Marie, but that’d take a few strips. Bonus points to Ingrid here if she’s actually got Alex cued up outside here, though.
And by the way, we may note that Zoé goes into battle dressed in a crop top and hipster jeans. She should just hope this doesn’t devolve into an old-school catfight. Some of us might hope that it does.

Also, not sure why Zoé was so ferociously annoyed by what Marie said. If Zoé actually does care that much about Marie, why leave her in Eva’s hands for a year? And if not, this just makes Zoé look like an egocentric psycho.

Because despite my hopes to see some hugging, Zoe is no-nonsense. She believed that by the point Marie slapped her, added by the anger that being assaulted like that would create, she, as stated in a previous strip, believed Marie was a lost cause. Only reason she's here now is because she learned that Eva is the reason why she got on that magazine cover and landed the commercial gig. Plus, with the additional knowledge that Marie is now being coerced into being Eva's protege, she's decided to settle the matter and (hopefully) ensure Marie that she can still be a model if she leaves Eva.
Also hopeful that Eva gets a smacking, too. And the Stank Twins.

I'm pretty sure the slap is to knock some sense into her and because she does care.

In the sense that she doesn't want to see Marie become a victim of Eva's machinations, and another casualty of the sordid lifestyle that she gladly promotes: Partying, drinking, possibly drugs (which we won't see in this comic, of course), and being a shallow, mean-spirited primadonna.

Perhaps she didn’t know Eva was behind all this. Signing up with a rival is one thing, but being manipulated as a means of attacking Zoe is another.

I see Zoe's Batman-like approach to interacting with her protegées has not changed a bit. Although that being said, this is beyond even the worst of what mainstream Batman did to any of his sons, be they adopted OR biological. So I guess she's closer to Talia al Ghul in that respect.

Think about it, though. When Ingrid went back to Zoe after Sandra got exiled, Zoe was near a breakdown and determined to quit the management biz. We know Zoe cares a great deal about her crew, even if she's bad at showing it to the point of being borderline abusive, and she's probably absolutely furious at Eva for letting a 17-year-old girl go down a hedonism spiral. (I mean, we know what an abusive mess the fashion industry is...) Zoe slapping Marie for that response isn't defensible as such, especially given that Zoe's gruffness is part of why Marie's in this situation to begin with, but it's understandable.
